Square Enix is among the third party publishers that have been supporting the Nintendo Switch since its release, but it has yet to release anything major for Nintendo's latest console. Judging from what the publisher's president recently said, however, bigger things may be coming.
Speaking with EDGE magazine, as reported by Nintendo Life, Square Enix president and CEO Yosuke Matsuda revealed that the publisher's eShop titles have been doing well and that many inside the company want to develop Nintendo Switch titles.
They (our eShop titles) haven’t done badly! Obviously it only came out last March, so it hasn’t been long, but of all the publishers who are working on Switch we’ve done quite a few things. It’s a very attractive platform – there are a lot of people within the company that are looking to make games for Switch
The latest Square Enix Nintendo Switch title is the classic JRPG Lost Sphear. In his review, Nate noted how the game isn't on the same level as I Am Setsuna, due to a bigger scope which ends up hurting the experience in the end.
Lost Sphear is a competently assembled retro product that may dredge up fond memories of older, better JRPGs, but it lacks a personality of its own. The unique, melancholy world of I Am Setsuna has been replaced by soulless tropes, and incrementally improved battle mechanics and dungeons don’t make up for that loss of identity. Sadly, the makers of Lost Sphear have lost the thread.
