Burger King has announced a deal with Sony Pictures to make a Spider-Man hamburger to help promote the upcoming release of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
The new Spider-Man Whopper is coming to BK stores starting May 15. The Spider-Man theme comes in the form of a red bun featuring black sesame seeds, which is meant to replicate Spider-Man's own design. It also has melted Swiss cheese and other stuff you'd expect like tomatoes, lettuce, mayo, pickles, onions, and ketchup.
Now I am hungryAcross the Spider-Verse premieres in theaters on June 2, and the Spider-Burger will be available at BK locations until June 21. The chain is also rolling out a Spider-Verse ice cream sundae this summer, featuring soft serve ice cream with black and red chocolate candies on it.
Across the Spider-Verse is the sequel to 2018's Into the Spider-Verse, which won Best Animated Feature Film at the Oscars. The sequel was expected to arrive much sooner but was delayed due in part to the pandemic. A third movie, Beyond the Spider-Verse, is coming in 2024.
Across the Spider-Verse takes place in six universes and features 240 characters. The 2018 movie had about 40 characters, for comparison.
"You can't make a movie that was based on being unique and groundbreaking and then just do the same thing over again," co-writer Christopher Miller said, according to AV Club. "So we had to, you know, try and break new ground. And in so it was way bigger, is the largest crew of an animated movie ever."
Co-writer Phil Lord added: "The original record was five hundred or so crew members. The first spider has broken with eight hundred. This movie has a thousand people working on it."
Across the Spider-Verse features the voices of Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Jake Johnson, Issa Rae, Daniel Kaluuya, Karan Soni, Jason Schwartzman, Brian Tyree Henry, Luna Lauren Velez, Greta Lee ,Rachel Dratch, Jorma Taccone, Shea Whigham, and Oscar Isaac.
