Space Jam: A New Legacy Adds Zendaya As Lola Bunny With Some Important Changes-October 2024
Oct 18, 2024 8:25 AM

Actress Zendaya is voicing Lola Bunny in the upcoming Space Jam: A New Legacy as part of the movie's ambition to make the character more "fully realized."

Director Malcolm D. Lee said that Lola was inappropriately depicted in the 1996 movie. She's wearing a crop top and is overall "not politically correct," he told Entertainment Weekly.

"This is a kids' movie: why is she in a crop top? It just felt unnecessary, but at the same time there's a long history of that in cartoons," he said.

Lee said it was his goal to "reflect the authenticity of strong, capable female characters" in A New Legacy. Lola Bunny will be seen first in the new movie alongside the Amazons from Wonder Woman.

"We reworked a lot of things, not only her look, like making sure she had an appropriate length on her shorts and was feminine without being objectified, but gave her a real voice," Lee said. "For us, it was, let's ground her athletic prowess, her leadership skills, and make her as full a character as the others."

Kath Soucie voiced Lola Bunny in the original movie, while Kristen Wiig voiced the character on The Looney Tunes Show.

A New Legacy debuts on July 16 in theaters and on HBO Max. The first trailer came online over the weekend, showing off LeBron James in the lead role of the live-action/CGI hybrid film.
