Sony Will Bring Movies To Netflix After Theaters, Including Uncharted And Spider-Man-October 2024
Oct 17, 2024 12:34 PM

Netflix has reached a deal with Sony Pictures to bring the movie studio's 2022 films and beyond to the streaming network exclusively following their run in theaters and home video. This includes movies like Uncharted, Morbius, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sequel.

The Sony films will come to Netflix after the first "pay window," which means after they finish up in theaters and aftertheir home entertainment release. The "pay one" window is historically about 18 months, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Netflix is also getting access to a library of back-catalog Sony Pictures films, including movies from subsidiaries such as Columbia. What's more, Netflix has announced it will finance "a number" of movies from Sony Pictures in the future under the deal.

The New York Times reported that Sony will produce "two or three" movies for Netflix per year under the new deal.

The 2021 Sony Marvel movies, Venom: Let There be Carnage and Spider-Man: No Way Home, are not part of this deal.

"At Sony Pictures, we produce some of the biggest blockbusters and the most creative, original films in the industry," Sony worldwide distribution president Keith Le Goy said in a statement. "This exciting agreement further demonstrates the importance of that content to our distribution partners as they grow their audiences and deliver the very best in entertainment."

Netflix's movie boss Scott Stuber added: "This not only allows us to bring their impressive slate of beloved film franchises and new IP to Netflix in the U.S., but it also establishes a new source of first-run films for Netflix movie lovers worldwide."

Sony Pictures is not the first film giant to announce a deal to bring its theatrical movies to a streaming company. Paramount has confirmed some of its major upcoming movies, including Mission: Impossible 7 and A Quiet Place II, will come to Paramount+ 45 days after they hit theaters. Additionally, Universal's movies will come to video-on-demand platforms 17 days after they debut in theaters.
