The Nintendo Switch port of Sonic Superstars is setting out to be a solid one, judging from information coming from this year's Tokyo Game Show.
As reported and translated by Noisy Pixel, the game's Development Producer and Character Designer Naoto Oshima spoke with Japanese website Denfaminicogamer, confirming the new entry in the series will run at smooth 60 frames per second on Nintendo Switch. While this sounded like a given, considering how undemanding the game looks, it's still nice to receive confirmation.
Sonic Superstars will set itself apart from most modern Sonic the Hedgehog games by featuring gameplay inspired by the 2D entries in the series. Controlling Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy, players will travel to the North Star Island to defeat Doctor Eggman and Fang the Hunter, whom he hired to create an army of giant animals. With countless loops to run through, rings to collect, Special Stages to complete, and more, Sonic Superstars is setting out to become the true successor of the classic 16-bit 2D games.
The latest entry in the series released on PC and consoles last year is Sonic Frontiers. While the game does have its own share of issues, it is a more than worthy play, as I highlighted in my review of the PC version.
Sonic Frontiers may not be the best Sonic the Hedgehog ever made, but it's definitely in the upper echelon of the franchise. The new open-world formula works surprisingly well even with its issues, and Cyber Space stages and combat are well-designed, engaging and, most of all, fun. With some tweaks, the Sonic Frontiers formula could be the basis for the franchise moving forward, potentially bringing it back to its glory days.
Sonic Superstars launches on PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and Xbox One on October 17th.
