Skyrim Special Edition New Update Brings Back One of the Most Despised Features Ever
Skyrim Special Edition New Update Brings Back One of the Most Despised Features Ever-October 2024
Oct 28, 2024 6:21 PM

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition was updated today on PC, bringing back what is unarguably one of the most despised features ever implemented by Bethesda in its popular role-playing game.

Update 1.6.1130 brings back the despised paid mods that were implemented into the game back in 2015, which can be found in a new menu that unites the previous Mods and Creations menus.

Bethesda said this is an updated way for players to discover, download, and play community-made content. Creations combines Skyrim’s existing Mods, Creation Club items and all-new Creations under a single Creations menu.

Creators can now also apply to the new Bethesda Game Studios Verified Creator Program. If accepted, they'll be able to set their own prices for their mods from a selection of options. You can find more about the Verified Creator Program on this page.

Unfortunately, today's update broke SKSE-related mods, so modders will have to fix their creations so that they can work with the new version of the game. The new The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition update also introduces official Steam Deck support and a few bug fixes. Full notes can be found on Bethesda's official website.

As already mentioned, this isn't the first time Bethesda has attempted to introduce paid mods for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. The previous attempt was with a special Steam Workshop feature powered by a pay-what-you-want system that allowed users to pay within a certain price range for mods. The backlash from the community was massive, so much that paid mods disappeared from Steam Workshop in a matter of days. A similar attempt with Fallout 4's Creation Club ended up in an actual lawsuit being filed against Bethesda. It is not hard to imagine the new attempt to sell mods will likely fail again.
