Shrek 5 hits theaters in a few years, and when it does, it'll have a story penned by Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me screenwriter Michael McCullers. News of this came in a Hollywood News interview with Trolls directors Walt Dohrn and Mike Mitchell.
"They've got a pretty good story. It's being written by Michael McCullers who wrote all of the Austin Powers films," Mitchell said. "He came up with a really great idea that they're exploring."
It's not yet clear if McCullers is only working on the story or will also lend his hand to the full script. Dohrn and Mitchell, who have worked on several Shrek movies, expressed interest in working on the upcoming Shrek sequel, though they aren't involved at the moment.
"There's more story to tell there, and we're ready to help tell it for sure," Dohrn said.
In addition to The Spy Who Shagged Me, McCullers has written Austin Powers in Goldmember, Undercover Brother, Baby Mama, and Mr. Peabody & Sherman. He's also penning the upcoming Hotel Transylvania 3 and The Boss Baby, which recently debuted its first trailer.
The last film in the series, Shrek Forever After, released in 2010. It featured Shrek making a deal with Rumpelstiltskin to go back in time to when he was a bachelor, living alone in his swamp. Of course, Rumpelstiltskin always has a trick up his sleeve and wipes Shrek from existence. Thankfully for Shrek fans, he'll come back to the big screen in 2019.
