The holiday season juggernaut keeps chugging this week, as retailers welcome a host of hardcore titles and a cadre of casual options as well. Among the more interesting new releases are a long-awaited multiplatform shooter, one of the biggest sports games in the world, and a new portable version of the most recent Grand Theft Auto game.
Headlining the week is Borderlands, the sci-fi role-playing first-person shooter from 2K Games and Gearbox Software. Combining driving and on-foot action, Borderlands boasts a massive array of unique, collectible weapons that number over a half-million in total. Originally expected late last year, the game was delayed in part so the developers could implement a new cel-chased "concept art" aesthetic to the game's visuals.

That's not the only big release from 2K Games parent Take-Two this week. The developer is also readying Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars for its debut on the PSP. Originally released on the DS in March, the game was met with critical acclaim but consumer apathy. Rockstar is hoping to change that with the PSP version, including new radio stations and some tweaked minigames as well.
For gamers who would rather shoot penalty kicks than people, EA Sports launches FIFA Soccer 10 in North America. Already released to critical plaudits overseas, FIFA Soccer 10 adds new manager and virtual pro modes to the long-running soccer sim.
The rest of the field of new releases is highlighted by a handful of new titles. Square Enix's Space Invaders Extreme 2 on the DS provides more of the trippy alien-exterminating thrills of the first Extreme, and Agetec's Way of the Samurai 3 on the Xbox 360 and PS3 takes gamers through another branching tale of swords and honor.
$234 worth of stuff for $199? Sure, why not?
Also arriving is the $200 Gran Turismo PSP bundle, which includes a UMD verison of Polyphony Digital's portable racer and a "Mystic Silver" PSP-3000. Also boxed in are a 2GB Memory Stick Pro Duo and vouchers for a series of downloadable goodies: an unspecified PlayStation Network movie and a white Chevrolet Corvette ZR1, a color not available in the regular game. Bought separately, the game and handheld would cost $209.98, with 2GB Memory Stick Duos selling for as low as $13 to $14 and PSN movies costing $9.99 to $14.99. US residents will also get a 10-song Sony Music Pass voucher.
Last but definitely not least, THQ's WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2010 gets in the retail ring on the X360, PS3, Wii, PS2, PSP, and DS. The game will let players create their own detailed storylines featuring pro wrestlers and introduces six new Road to Wrestlemania storylines.
