Shenmue III Delayed Yet Again, Yu Suzuki Promises the Game’s “Almost Ready”-November 2024
Nov 2, 2024 5:23 PM

Against all odds, Shenmue III seems to be shaping up into an actual, playable video game, with series mastermind Yu Suzuki recently detailing the game’s skill system, combat, and more. That said, the game’s August release date still seemed very optimistic, and so it’s not exactly a huge shock to report the game has suffered another delay. Thankfully, this latest setback isn’t a huge one, as the game is only slipping three months to November. Here’s what Suzuki had to say about the delay…

Whilst almost ready, the game simply needs a little more refinement before being truly finished. We feel that the extra time we have will help us deliver the true Shenmue experience players around the world deserve! We thank you for your patience and understanding.

Let’s hope Suzuki isn’t just making empty promises, and Shenmue III is really almost ready. That said, I wouldn’t not be at all surprised if the game’s release gets pushed back again. Shenmue III raised over $6.3 million on Kickstarter back in 2015, but development has moved slowly since. New to the series? Here’s a recap of the Shenmue saga so far…

The main character, Ryo Hazuki has his father murdered before him by Lan Di, the boss of the underground organization, Chi You Men. Ryo learns of the existence of a mysterious pair of mirrors, and makes his way to Hong Kong to unravel the mystery and avenge his father. A stranger in a new land, Ryo gains the help of Ren Wuying, and together they make contact with Yuanda Zhu, only to see Lan Di make his escape. Continuing to pursue his father’s Killer, Ryo travels to Bailu Village in Guilin. Along the way, he meets a new companion, Shenhua Ling who will forever change his destiny. The story of Shenmue was originally scripted for a total of eleven chapters.

Shenmue II brought the story up to chapter six, with Shenmue III continuing from there at Bailu Village. What secrets are held within the twin mirrors? Will Ryo face his arch nemesis, Lan Di in a final showdown? What does fate hold in store for Ryo and Shenhua?

Shenmue III is scheduled to launch on PC and PS4 on November 19. We’ll see if that sticks.
