Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II was one of the first games announced for the Xbox Series X/S all the way back in 2019, and in some ways, it’s become somewhat emblematic of Xbox Game Studios’ inability to get content out in a timely fashion. In the four years since Hellblade II was revealed we haven’t seen that much of the game and it's been rather unclear how well developer Ninja Theory is progressing on the ambitious project.
Well, today at the big Xbox Games Showcase we got a nice update, with Ninja Theory confirmed a 2024 release for the game. We also got a peek at some new footage, running on Xbox Series X. The footage begins with a look at an impressively-detailed cave environment, but mostly, it’s a character-driven trailer, focused on Senua again battling with the voices in her head. While not the most action-packed clip, it is a good showcase of Hellblade II’s industry-leading facial animations. You can check out the new Hellblade II trailer for yourself, below.
It looks like Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II is shaping up quite well, although I'd like to see more straight, uncut gameplay. Everything we've seen thus far has felt a bit too "staged," if you know what I mean. Will Hellblade II actually end up being an Xbox Series X system seller? That remains to be seen, but I think it has a better chance than some of the other games shown off by Microsoft today. Haven’t been keeping up with the game? You can get a look at the game’s cutting-edge facial animations here and an earlier trailer here. Here's a brief description of the game's new trailer...
"Everything has led Senua to this moment. Sink deep into the next chapter of Senua’s story with this showcase of cinematic immersion, beautifully realised visuals and encapsulating sound from the team at Ninja Theory. Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II ventures onto PC and Xbox Series X/S sometime in 2024. What do you think? Excited to delve into Senua's mind again?
