Secrets of Tekken Tag Revealed
Secrets of Tekken Tag Revealed-October 2024
Oct 27, 2024 6:32 AM

We all know that Namco's Tekken games have always been more complete at home than they ever were in the arcade. Sure, the gameplay never changed, but added modes such as Tekken Ball and Tekken Force have added value to the home conversions. Tekken Tag Tournament for the PlayStation2, of course, contains similar hidden features, and we've unlocked several of them.

Of course, there are tons of characters to unlock, including the game's unnamed final boss. But the most off-the-wall added feature is Tekken Bowl. This mode is a little bowling minigame. You pick two characters, just like the normal game. Each fighter has different stats that bring variance in power, speed, and ball control. Since you're picking two characters, you can create a little team that specializes. For instance, P-Jack throws incredibly hard and fast, but it's occasionally difficult to place the ball exactly how you'd like. So partnering the big lug up with Xiaoyu, who rolls very slowly but has a very slow-swinging ball-direction meter, lets you smash as many pins as possible and still have a finesse roller in reserve to pick up your spares. Scoring more than 200 in Tekken Bowl unlocks a jukebox option in the bowling mode, so you can pick what music (if any) plays while you roll.

Another interesting unlockable item is the gallery. Once the gallery is unlocked, you can pause the game at any time and select screen capture. This saves the current image to your memory card. You can save up to 12 shots. While most of the game's endings are rendered using the game engine, the final boss's ending is an amazing FMV clip.

Finally, there's Embu2. This short movie is an altered version of the original Embu sequence, which plays during the game's attract mode and shows the fighters punching and kicking at you. While the original contains Hwoarang, Xiaoyu, and other human characters, Embu2 replaces the fighters with Panda, Kuma, Alex, and Roger.

We haven't beaten the game with every character yet. So it's possible that there are still more features to open up. Stay tuned for more info, including a full import review.
