On Thursday, Nikkei Online reported that a million units of the Emotion Engine and Graphic Synthesizer chip have finished production. The news was delivered by Ken Kutaragi, Sony Computer Entertainment president, during a press conference regarding the launch of PlayStation.com February 18 in Japan. This is good news for gamers who were worried about Sony not being to produce a million PlayStation2 units in time for the March 4 launch date.
When asked about Microsoft's vaporware X-Box, Mr. Kutaragi commented, "We have not obtained any information regarding the hardware. We don't think it will be our rival. For instance, I don't think automobile company A and B have to necessarily compete against each other. If Microsoft thinks we are their rival, that would be an honor."
Sony PlayStation2 is scheduled for a March 4 launch in Japan.
