The first clip from the upcoming live-action anime adaptation Ghost in the Shell has been released. It features Scarlett Johansson as the Major, awakening after a terrorist attack to discover some dramatic changes. Check it out below:

　　The clip follows a series of motion posters released earlier this week that showcased the movie's characters. Last month, a new trailer was released--it revealed more plot details than some of the earlier teasers.

　　Ghost in the Shell was one of the key anime films to break through to a western audience in the '90s. It was based on Masamune Shirow's manga and was followed by a variety of movie sequels and the TV series Stand Alone Complex and SAC: 2nd Gig.

　　In a recent interview, producer Avi Arad explained that the movie is not a straight adaptation of the first movie, but instead draw inspiration from a variety of sources. "The big thing we are doing here is that not an origin backstory," he said. "But we are addressing [the Major]'s sense of self and resolving how she defines herself in terms of memories. That's one of the main thrusts in the story. Inspired by [the episode] "Affection" in 2nd Gig. It's bits and pieces of those mixed together.

　　"You'll recognize some things from Ghost in the Shell: Innocence like the geisha bot. Everything we pulled from the movies is because we thought it was cool."

　　Ghost in the Shell also stars Pilou Asbæk, Takeshi Kitano, Juliette Binoche, and Michael Pitt. It hits theaters on March 31, 2017.
