RPCSX Emulator Can Already Run Its First PlayStation 4 Game-October 2024
Oct 19, 2024 7:34 AM

RPCSX, the upcoming PS4 emulator from the team behind the popular RPCS3 PS3 emulator, can already successfully run its first PS4 title.

Some days ago we reported that the promising PS4 emulator was able to boot up one of the most popular PS4 titles to date - Bloodborne. FromSoftware's masterpiece still hasn't been ported to PC (and players are still eagerly waiting for a PS5 patch), and as such, fans are expecting a lot from the project. Fast forward less than a week, and YouTuber 'BrutalSam' has now shared a new video showing off RPCSX actually running its first PS4 game - Sonic Mania. You can check out the gameplay video below.

Granted, Sonic Mania is a 2D title and not the most demanding game by any means (it also runs on the Switch), but the progress that has been made by the team behind the RPCSX project in such a short period is to be applauded. It should be noted that, in order to successfully run the game using RPCSX, you'll need quite a powerful setup - for this gameplay video, 'Brutal Sam' used a Core i7 6700K CPU with 8GB of RAM and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 GPU. Even then, the game's overall framerate hovered at roughly 10FPS while all of the CPU power was used. As such, you can imagine the hardware required to run the more recent demanding AAA PS4 games. Still, we're pretty sure that fans will appreciate this gameplay video.

As mentioned on the RPCSX GitHub page, the project is "an experimental emulator for PS4 (PlayStation 4) for Linux written in C++". Those interested can download the latest version of the PS4 emulator right here.

A hommage to the original Sonic games, Sonic Mania was released by SEGA back in 2017. The prelude to Sonic Forces was released for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Here's what we wrote about the game's Plus version, which was released in 2018.

"Sonic Mania Plus is an essential upgrade if you already own and enjoy the original version of the game", our very own Nathan Birch wrote in his review of the PlayStation 4 version of the game. "Newcomers should also give this updated offering a look, as it captures what made classic Sonic uniquely appealing, while fixing some of the base game’s shortcomings. Sonic Mania Plus still has a few lingering issues, but, overall, this heartfelt hedgehog homage has been honed to the next level."
