Nov 5, 2024 5:52 AM

The popular PC and PlayStation 4 video game Rocket League could one day extend to new forms of media and entertainment. Developer Psyonix says in a new interview that the studio has held talks about a Rocket League movie or TV show, while a toy line is also on the table.

"We've had discussions with various people and studios in Hollywood about making movies based on Rocket League, or a TV show," Psyonix VP of marketing and communications Jeremy Dunham told MCV.

Dunham didn't name these parties outright, nor did he provide any further details about a potential plot for a Rocket League movie or TV show. The game is essentially soccer with cars, with its story taking a backseat to the gameplay. But then again, Tetris and Monopoly movies are also in development...

He also stressed that, regarding a potential Rocket League movie, TV show, or toy deal, nothing is official and no contracts have been signed. One of the main reasons for that is that there are a "lot of questions" from deal-makers about the wider Rocket League fiction and lore, and how that would all come together for a movie or TV show. But still, it's an exciting time for Psyonix.

"Now we are getting to the point where the people who want to work with us are much much more famous," Dunham explained. "It's crazy. The meetings that I have with new companies who I didn't realize were Rocket League players--it blows my mind. They're still playing the game and are still interested in it. It makes us almost speechless, we're wondering when it's going to end."

Rocket League has been one of the biggest hits this summer. As of the end of July, Rocket League passed 5 million downloads across PC and PlayStation 4. The game has sold more than 1 million copies on Steam alone. It's is set to grow further still with more DLC and a release for additional systems.

In other recent Rocket League news, developer Psyonix has outlined the game's next patch and teased that an announcement about forthcoming DLC is coming soon. You can also watch this funny video in which real-world soccer commentators go bananas for Rocket League goals.
