Response from Monolith's Quake Champ
Response from Monolith's Quake Champ-October 2024
Oct 24, 2024 8:20 AM

As Quake players finally saw the response from Monolith's challenge, GS News contacted Craig Hubbard, Monolith's champ, to find out what he thinks about CEO bets and strong language regarding his ability in the Quake arena.

In an official statement that he released today, he said that he was flattered by Jason Hall's bet on his (Craig's) ability to beat Quake champ Thresh and said, "So do I really believe I could beat Thresh? Sure. He's a great player, but even great players can be toppled. Do I believe he could beat me? Of course. He didn't win John Carmack's Ferrari by accident."

The reason why he chose to come out with an official statement was because the whole affair is interfering with his productivity. Craig is the lead designer in Monolith's upcoming game Riot, which is a shooter based on anime-type themes.

From the screenshots we've seen, it looks like a great game and if Craig excels at Quake, gamers can be sure that Riot is in the right hands. He said, "I am busting my ass to make a great, exciting game and also deliver it on schedule, which is the perpetual challenge in game development. All my time and effort are going into ensuring that Riot is as polished and fun as possible. There's no room in that equation for a high profile match with insane stakes, against someone I've never played or even met."

Hubbard closed his official statement with the hope that the match will happen. "I would love to play Thresh, but not until Riot is done and not for $25,000. And that's all I have to say about that."

Now Quake enthusiasts will have to wait for Riot to be completed before a formal challenge is set.
