[UPDATE] Just as predicted, Microsoft today officially announced the Xbox One Media Remote in a blog post on the Xbox Wire. It will be available in early March for $25.
The original story is below.
Microsoft is reportedly gearing up for a new Xbox One product announcement, but it might not be what you think, hope, or expect. Sources familiar with Microsoft's plans have told The Verge that the company will announce its rumored Xbox One Media Remote tomorrow, February 20. Images of the device leaked on Amazon last week.
The Verge understands that the Xbox One Media Remote will allow users to navigate, launch, and control media apps. The device will also reportedly work as an infrared remote to control TV or AV receiver volume. In addition, the controller supposedly has a button that will launch the OneGuide TV functionality, but the channel up and channel down buttons are only going to work in the United States within the TV app, The Verge claims.
This is most likely because Xbox One TV support is currently only available in the United States. The Xbox One Media Remote is rumored to launch on March 4, and the original Amazon listing showed a price point of around $22. The current Xbox 360 Media Remote sells for $20.
Going off the leaked image, the Xbox One Media Remote appears to be a smaller version of the Xbox 360's remote, but with one notable difference: it does not include the Xbox One's face buttons like the Xbox 360 remote does. A Microsoft representative told GameSpot, "We do not comment on rumors and speculation."
Microsoft has labeled the Xbox One an "all-in-one" device that plays your games, movies, and TV out of the box. So the fact that a Media Remote exists is not as surprising as the fact that it was not available alongside the console to begin with.
