In a week of big releases, Rockstar's Western epic was the big winner with the 11th biggest first week in UK all-formats chart history. Other big-name releases didn't fare quite so well; Sony may well be disappointed with the much-vaunted ModNation Racers only just squeaking into the top 10, while Ubisoft may have been hoping for a higher than ninth-place start for Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands.
Holding off the new releases was EA's 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa, which slipped to two after seeing sales fall by 25 percent from last week's levels. Just under that were two perennial chart favourites, Just Dance and Wii Fit Plus, at three and four respectively, climbing from four and nine. Black Rock Studio's racing effort Split/Second: Velocity was the second new release to make the top 10, giving Disney Interactive a reason to be cheerful at number five.
Rockstar should be able to afford a few more head of cattle after Red Dead's first week performance.
Dice's EA-published shooter Battlefield: Bad Company 2 was a non-mover at six, while Capcom's Lost Planet 2 slipped four places to number seven. Alan Wake plummeted from two last week to eight this week, before the chart was rounded out by the other two new entries, Prince of Persia and ModNation Racers.
The last week in May sees some big-name releases added to the mix, with THQ's UFC 2010 Undisputed facing off against Blur, Alpha Protocol, and the long-awaited (in Europe, at least) No More Heroes 2. Those who like their gaming with a more Eastern edge have two titles that may tickle their fancy, with the release of Valkyria Chronicles 2 and Samurai Warriors 3, neither of which have confirmed releases in North America.
