Real 3D Feels ATI's Rage-November 2024
Nov 15, 2024 12:57 PM

Last week Real 3D, co-developers of the Intel i740 graphics chipset, sued Canadian-based ATI Technologies for patent infringement. Real 3D insists that ATI's Rage line of video cards encroaches on two of the company's patents for "modulating color for effecting color cell texture'' and "advanced video object generator". As was to be expected, ATI counter sued Real 3D earlier this week.

The counter suit, filed in a Delaware courtroom, claims that the Real 3D lawsuit doesn't hold water, and is seeking a dismissal for fear of hampered sales of its Rage products. This week alone, however, ATI scored more than five Rage design wins with serious vendors like Sony, Gateway and Fujitsu.

Patent infringement lawsuits have become commonplace in this industry - major players the likes of 3dfx, nVidia, Aureal, Creative Labs and S3 are all currently embroiled in patent lawsuits of their own. We'll update you with more developments, as they become available.
