After the wait, Quake II catches up with its predecessor. Last night, id released the version 3.12 patch (known as the point release), and it appears to be the most popular download on the Web. Adding the ability to play cooperatively with other players in eight massive deathmatch levels is sure to pull gamers away from the outside world and into the thousands of deathmatch arenas all over the Web.
Although the levels feel much like before, there is a hint of more animation (in the form of spinning bridges and rotating cogwheels), and the levels are more densely populated with weapons, ammo, armor, health, and adrenaline.
Also, id has released a CTF (Capture the Flag) patch for the new version of Quake II. From all the e-mails we've received in the last few months from our readers, deathmatch maps and CTF were the most highly sought-after add-ons for Quake II.
GameSpot should have its Quake II server (quake.gamespot.com) up and running with the new version shortly, so swing on by and try to shoot us down.
