PSP's new sights and sounds
PSP's new sights and sounds-October 2024
Oct 20, 2024 9:12 PM

PSP peripherals and utilities aren't exactly flowing out of Sony. The electronics maker may have released the multimedia handheld with intent to make it easily connect with PCs, but users want more.

Not willing to wait for Sony to meet customer demand, a few third-party manufacturers took matters into their own hands.

Fire International, the company that makes the Xploder brand used in cheat systems such as the GameShark, is releasing two programs for the PC that are designed to make PSP life a bit easier. The PSP Xploder Movie Player and Media Center helps PSP owners manage their PSP's files, as well as convert PC movies to the handheld's format. The second program, PSP Music Studio, is for audiophiles interested in a simple way to convert CDs and AACs to the PSP's preferred MP4 standard, and it provides owners with simple drag-and-drop functionality from iTunes.

Though the PSP's screen is considered to be one of the selling points of the system, it's still relatively small. With no built-in video-out capability, owners can't play their games or movies on an external monitor. Asian Toy Source is working on a product with the self-explanatory name of PSPonTV. The nonintrusive peripheral lets gamers view their PSPs on an external source without tinkering with the system's insides, like others do. Let the buyer beware, however, as there is no information on how it works, nor are there pictures of the unit.
