PSP firmware update adds NeoGeo, TG-16 folders
PSP firmware update adds NeoGeo, TG-16 folders-October 2024
Oct 28, 2024 2:26 PM

Earlier today, Sony updated the PlayStation 3's firmware to v3.40, bringing with it the premium PlayStation Plus service, enhanced Facebook integration, a rating system for PlayStation Store content, and other features. Sony's PSP also received an upgrade to firmware v6.30, and on paper, the most significant change was a new grouping method for the "Group Content" menu.

NeoGeo and TG-16 games may be on the way for PSP owners. However, the publisher appears to have also laid the groundwork for the as-yet-unannounced addition of new gaming platforms to the PSP's online store. Those who update their systems will notice two new folders in the "Game" menu, one for SNK Playmore's NeoGeo and the other for Hudson and NEC's PCEngine, better known in the US as the TurboGrafx-16.

Sony had not commented on when the legacy console's games would be added to the PSP's online store. However, the addition of TurboGrafx-16 games to the PS Store wouldn't be without precedence; Sony has offered a range of the system's titles on the PSP in Japan since July 2009.

Further, the Entertainment Software Rating Board has previously indicated that NeoGeo classics would eventually make their way to the PSP. Recently, the ESRB passed ratings off for SNK classics such as Alpha Mission II, League Bowling, Baseball Stars Professional, Super Sidekicks, and SNK Arcade Classics 0.
