Jan 15, 2025 4:37 PM

Circana, the company formerly known as NPD, has released its monthly video game sales report for the United States. There are a number of key takeaways, including Resident Evil 4 becoming the best-selling game of March 2023, Hogwarts Legacy remaining the No. 1 best-selling game of 2023 so far, and the PlayStation 5 surpassing the PlayStation 4 in a key sales metric.

PS5 sales after 29 months on the market have have now surpassed those of the PS4 over the same period of time. That's a notable accomplishment in part because the PS5 was pinched by supply issues until recently.

Spending on games in March 2023 dropped by 7% year-over-year to $3.8 billion. It was always going to be a tough comparison, though, as Circana noted that February 2022 benefitted from the launch of several key titles and strong second-month sales of Elden Ring.

For March 2023, premium game sales, as well as PC add-on content and mobile titles, saw declines; non-mobile subscription and digital console add-on content grew to help offset the losses.

Resident Evil 4 was March 2023's best-selling game in the US and instantly jumped to No. 3 on the list of best-selling games so far in 2023. Hogwarts Legacy had another strong month, finishing March 2023 as the No. 2 title. It continues to be 2023's best-selling game in the US.

For mobile, Candy Crush Saga, Roblox, Royal Match, Coin Master, Pokémon Go, Township, Gardenscapes, Bingo Blitz, Evony, and Homescapes led the way in terms of spending.

Switching to hardware, spending jumped by 10% compared to March 2022, reaching $566 million. March 2023 was the second-best March for hardware spending of all time in the US, only trailing March 2021 ($680 million).

The PS5 was the top-selling console in dollar and unit sales for March 2023, while it continues to be the best-selling system in the US for 2023 so far. Xbox Series X|S ranked No. 2 in March 2023 for dollar sales, with Switch claiming the No. 2 spot for unit sales.

For accessories, spending jumped by 1% year-over-year, to $239 million. Gamepads were the most successful accessory, and the newly released $200 PS5 DualSense Edge controller was the best-selling gamepad for dollar sales during March 2023 in the US.

Total spending on gaming hardware in the US so far in 2023 ($1.5 billion) is 21% higher than where it was at over the same period of time last year.
