PS VR Processor Unit Doesn’t Support 1080P & 4K HDR Pass Through; Unplugging PSVR & Reconnecting PS4 Required To View HDR Content-November 2024
Nov 26, 2024 1:41 PM

Sony’s PS VR Processor Unit (PU) doesn’t support pass through of 1080P and 4K HDR signals, and as such, unplugging the PU is required to view PS4 and PS4 Pro content in HDR.

Earlier today Sony published the official PlayStation FAQ on the PlayStation Blog. While most of the info provided is already known, the FAQ has quite an interesting tidbit when it comes to viewing HDR content on both the PS4 and upcoming PS4 Pro when the PS VR PU is connected.

As described in the FAQ, the PU connects PS VR to a player’s PS4 console and TV. In this setup, the unit acts as an HDMI splitter which provides images to PS VR and the TV.

While the PU supports 1080P and 4K signal pass through of non-VR content when the PS4 or PS4 Pro is connected to a TV via the unit, the PU doesn’t support HDR signal pass through for 1080P and 4K content on both the base PS4 and the PS4 Pro.

Q: Does the Processor Unit support 4K and HDR pass through?

The PS VR Processor Unit (PU) supports video pass through so that you can enjoy regular non-VR content on your TV when you have the PS4 connected to the TV via the PU and the PU is connected to power via the AC adapter and the PS VR headset is not in use. This pass-through support works for regular 1080p signals and also supports 2160p (UHD or ‘4K’) content in YUV 420 color format at up to 60 Hz from a PlayStation Pro.

However, HDR signals are not supported for pass through by the PU. This applies to both 1080p and 2160p HDR. If you have an HDR capable TV and want to view PS4 content in HDR, it is necessary to cable the PS4 directly to the TV.

Basically, this means that for those who are lucky enough to own both PSVR and an HDR TV, unplugging the PU and reconnecting the PS4 (or PS4 Pro) directly to the TV, is required to view PS4 content in HDR.

This is quite inconvenient and it would seem like a design flaw on Sony’s part. Hopefully, Sony will solve this via a hardware revision in the near future.
