Pre-TGS: Sega Announces DC Details
Pre-TGS: Sega Announces DC Details-October 2024
Oct 21, 2024 11:21 AM

TOKYO - Sega of America was kind enough to invite members of the press to its parent's headquarters in Japan to talk about the Dreamcast. Headlined by Sega's Peter Moore and Shouichirou Irimajri, the press briefing told of the incredible sales of the Dreamcast in the US.

According to Sega of America, the system has now sold more than 400,000 units in six days. Earlier this month, Sega announced that it expected to sell 400,000 in the first 30 days of the systems release, so it's clear that sales have exceeded even Sega's expectations. And Sega fully expects the system to sell well through the holidays. "Our new challenge is frankly to make enough," said Peter Moore.

Sega now expects to sell one million units in three-and-a-half months. By comparison, the Nintendo 64 took seven months to achieve that number, and the PlayStation took eight. The company also told of how it expects to have 100 titles on store shelves by this time next year.

We were also told that the Zip drive add-on is still coming - and for the first time ever we saw a photo of the unit. And as predicted, the device will rest under the console. Also, Sega spoke of a microphone, a camera, and DVD in the future for the US version. It's interesting to note that according to Sega an external DVD peripheral has already been designed, but the company does not want to release it until the peripheral can be produced at a low cost for the consumer. In addition to the cost factor, Peter Moore stated that, "DVD will come to the Dreamcast when it can enhance gameplay."

Sega also offered us a look back at the past year's events leading up to the Dreamcast, showing us some of the company's bigger marketing tactics. We viewed all the advertisements for the Dreamcast system, and Sega informed us that a new Soul Calibur ad would be starting in the US this week.

The latter half of Sega's press conference gave us a new look at titles such as Shen Mue and Bio Hazard: Code Veronica. For impressions on those, as well as other big new announcements from Sega not covered in this story, make sure to browse through the rest of today's headlines.
