For the original Portal, Valve tapped obscure nerd-rock icon Jonathan Coulton to deliver the science-experiment-gone-nightmare puzzler's iconic end-credit tune, "Still Alive," to huge success. For Portal 2, Valve has again enlisted indie rock help, announcing today that it has secured the talent of The National to write an original song for the game.
Valve offered no indication of what gamers can expect from The National, saying only that the band's recording label approached them about doing a song for the game.
Listening to The National and escaping from this room apparently provide the same "visceral reactions." "The National's raw and emotive music evokes the same visceral reactions from its listeners that Portal does from its players," Bug Music manager Julia Betley said. Like the first game, Portal 2 sees players attempting to escape from an aseptic house-of-horrors science facility, where they must solve puzzles to avoid being exterminated.
