PlayStation VR is Sony's Official Name For Project Morpheus-November 2024
Nov 27, 2024 2:36 PM

Sony has finally branded Project Morpheus, its upcoming virtual reality headset for PlayStation 4, as PlayStation VR.

The new name for the hardware was revealed by Atsushi Morita, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Japan, at Sony's Tokyo Game Show 2015 press conference. Morisha added that Sony hopes to make the upcoming VR device a "sensation."

"The name ‘PlayStation VR’ not only directly expresses an entirely new experience from PlayStation that allows players to feel as if they are physically inside the virtual world of a game," Sony said in a statement released following the event.

"[The name] also reflects our hopes that we want our users to feel a sense of familiarity as they enjoy this amazing experience."

It continued: "We will continue to refine the hardware from various aspects, while working alongside 3rd party developers and publishers and SCE Worldwide Studios, in order to bring content that deliver exciting experiences only made possible with VR."

Sony still has not confirmed when PlayStation VR will be available. In June 2015, Shuhei Yoshida, Sony's head of worldwide studios, explained key details regarding the device's launch plans remain undecided.

Despite this, he added the PlayStation VR project was "going very, very well."

"We have 20 games that are playable at E3. We had to turn down more submissions from both third-parties and first-parties to prioritise what we wanted to show."

He continued: "The hardware is on schedule. Lots of games are being created. Some we are showing will hit the launch date that we haven't decided as of yet. So it's going really well."

Sony previously said a consumer PlayStation VR model will launch in the first half of 2016, though nothing more specific has been mentioned since.

In regards to the price, Yoshida previously said Sony's aim was to go "as low as possibly can be done."

"We are not talking about any specific number, but this is a console business. We try to provide the hardware at the lowest possible cost so that more people can come in. And so that developers can make games on to create the market. So we'll have the same approach."
