PlayStation Experience Not Happening in 2018, Sony Admits to Not Having Enough to Show-September 2024
Sep 21, 2024 11:29 PM

Over the past few years, PlayStation Experience has become one of the major events on the annual gaming calendar, with Sony often holding back major announcements or trailers for the show. Well, you shouldn’t expect any big reveals this year, because the show straight up isn’t happening.

During an appearance on the PlayStation Blogcast, SIE Worldwide Studios chairman Shawn Layden explained Sony simply didn’t have enough new stuff to show to make putting on PlayStation Experience worthwhile this year…

"PlayStation Experience, we've done that the last four years. It began as sort of a celebration of the 20th anniversary of PlayStation. We decided it was time to have a consumer-focused event [...] and then we expanded to the next year, and the year after that. It became a great place for us to bring news to the fans, to get closer to the new games we're working on, to some of the stuff we may have announced at E3.

For 2018, I know this is going to be a disappointment to some people, but we decided not to hold PlayStation Experience. The reason behind that is, we don't have...we have a lot of progress, and now that we have Spider-Man, looking down in 2019 to games like Dreams and Days Gone, but we wouldn't have enough to bring people altogether in some location in North America to have that event. We don't want to set expectations really high and then not deliver on it. It was a hard decision, but we have determined we will not hold PlayStation Experience."

Disappointing news, to say the least. It also casts some uncertainty on next year’s Sony lineup – the fact that Layden didn’t mention The Last of Us Part II amongst his 2019 games may be telling. Meanwhile, Microsoft recently announced a new Xbox event, X018, for November.

What do you think we can expect from Sony’s 2019 lineup? Should we prepare for a lean year, or is PlayStation Experience being cancelled not really a big deal?
