When can we expect the next generation of consoles to kick off? Both Sony and Microsoft have recently released powered-up “half-step” machines, the PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X, but when will the full-on successors arrive?

　　Earlier this year, there was a lot of speculation about when we might see the PlayStation 5 or next Xbox, with the usually-reliable Wall Street Journal saying the a new PlayStation could arrive as early as the back half of 2018. Sony and Microsoft have downplayed the speculation, but the possibility of the PS5/NeXtbox coming so soon after the release of the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X has been a cause for concern amongst console gamers.

　　Well, according to Yves Guillemot, you and your wallet can breathe easy. The Ubisoft CEO touched on the next console generation in a recent investor’s call, and it sounds like it won’t be arriving too soon.

　　"As Sony launched PlayStation 4 Pro last year and Microsoft Xbox One X this year, we think we still have a minimum of two years in front of us before something new is coming, but that's just our perception.”

　　You can probably trust Guillemot’s perception on this one. Ubisoft almost always strongly supports new consoles, and launch titles often require years of lead time to develop. When Ubisoft’s CEO says the next PlayStation and Xbox are at least two years away, it’s not just a shot in the dark.

　　During the same investor’s call, Guillemot praised Sony and Microsoft’s current souped-up machines…

　　"We really like the fact that Sony and Microsoft are really putting more power in their machines, using the evolution of technology to give power to our developers to create better games for our players. That is going in the right direction rather than trying to do accessories or other things. That is going to help the industry a lot because the games will be really beautiful on those machines."
