Sony has for the first time officially dropped the price of its PlayStation 4, with the popular system’s RRP in Japan now cut to 34,980 yen.

　　The price cut will go into effect on October 31, according to Sony Japan executives speaking at the Tokyo Game Show. This decrease represents a price drop of just about 12 percent.

　　When converted to US currency, it means the 2013 launch price, which was about $334, has dropped to $292.

　　However, there is no indication that this price drop will trigger similar discounts across Europe or the US. PlayStation 4 sales have far surpassed Sony’s internal expectations since it shipped in late 2013, but some analysts believe its weakest market is now Japan. This price drop could be considered a localised plan to stimulate sales in the region.
