No Man’s Sky, one of the most expansive games ever created, is out, and players aren’t sparing a minute exploring the game’s procedurally generated universe; a universe that is so vast, chances are no one will ever get to visit the locations that you have visited during your journey. The PlayStation 4 console-exclusive title has so much to offer, but as it turns out, it can offer even more with more powerful hardware that PlayStation 4 Neo is supposed to deliver, and not just in terms of graphics and framerate, but in terms of fundamental gameplay experience.
“It means we can fundamentally change the experience,” said Hello Games director Sean Murray while talking to Daily Star, explaining how No Man's Sky can uniquely benefit from a release on Sony’s upcoming PlayStation 4 Neo console. Since the game is procedurally generated, the new hardware won’t only allow the team to upgrade graphics and improve technical performance, it will also essentially make it possible for the developer to change the core experience of the game.
"If you play another game and if they do a remaster of that game, what they will do is up-res the textures and things like that. That's because the base geometry, the base shape of the world, the way of playing is totally like lost, basically. 100’s of people have worked on it thousands of hours to create what you see.
For our game (No Man's Sky) it’s procedurally generated. So more powerful hardware doesn’t just mean upgraded textures or a higher framerate. It means we can fundamentally change the experience.
You can have - and you'll see this from our patch notes - we're able to change huge things in the universe, because we have complete control. With more powerful hardware, we can have more trees, more leafs on those trees. The density or immersion of worlds, or new types of worlds could exist. It's a really fun thing to think about, it’s a really fun thing to think about what impact more powerful hardware could have on our game and tech in the future.”
Of course, Murray is speaking hypothetically here, as so far, no plans have been announced for an upgraded version of No Man’s Sky for PlayStation 4 Neo, which was officially announced in June, and would possibly be unveiled next month at a special event in New York. Reports have stated that games released on Neo will also run on the standard PlayStation 4 via a “Base Mode,” and hardware-specific improvements will be available on the new console through a “Neo Mode”.
