Sega's Dynamite Deka 2 for the Dreamcast was just released in Japan this week and we got our hands on the game. Here's what we found.
A group of pirates have taken control of a cruise ship and is holding the president's daughter hostage. With your battle honed skills and quick wits, its up to you and your team to rescue her again.
Gameplay consists of punching and kicking everyone you come into contact with, just like all good beat em ups. Each area has tons of objects that can pick up and use as weapons like chairs, plants, mannequins, and cream pies to name a few. Of course there are conventional weapons that you'll find along the way including pistols, machineguns, and rocket launchers. Area cut scenes, rendered in both the CG and in-game engine, help to show the progression of your character through the ship. During some of these scenes a warning appears and you are asked to push either a direction or a button. If you press the correct button or direction in the split second allotted - you keep going. If you fail, you must fight an extra band of henchmen, just like in Die Hard Arcade.
Dynamite Deka 2 is great mindless button pressing fun and with loads of bad guys and lots of different weapons and objects to take those bad guys out with - the game doesn't get stale. That also could be because the game is incredibly short, we literally went through it in a half-hour. There are however three different missions to play to take you different areas that add a little more replay value. Visually the game looks like a cleaner more detailed version of Die Hard Arcade. And the characters look and move well and the environments are quite detailed.
While it may be a short game it is still is a fun game, at least for the duration of the hour that we played it before writing this. As of yet no official US release date has been set for the game although it is expected to come to the US. Check videogames.com soon for a full-blown review of Dynamite Deka 2.
