PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Passes Huge New Milestones for Concurrent Players and Bans-October 2024
Oct 16, 2024 10:29 PM

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds had a hell of a 2017, and it seems like its momentum is going to carry right on into the new year. This morning the ultra-popular shooter surged over 3 million concurrent players (3,106,358 to be exact) on Steam, a fact the titular PlayerUnknown (aka Brendan Greene) was all too happy to boast about.

OVER 3 MILLION!! Thank you all for helping us reach this amazing milestone! GG WP everybody <3 pic.twitter.com/twUQkSkP5U

3 million concurrent players is an astounding number, but it isn’t a surprising one. PUBG stormed past 1 million concurrent players in September and 2 million in October – passing 3 million almost seemed like an inevitability. To put these numbers in context, Steam’s second-most popular game, Dota 2, has never made it past 1.3 million concurrent players. So, just how far could PUBG go? The game’s developers have predicted they may hit 100 million copies sold, at which point, 10 million (or more) concurrent players could happen. Right now, it seems all too plausible.

Today also saw PUBG pass another, less commendable, milestone – according to anti-cheat company BattlEye, PUBG has brought the ban hammer down an amazing 1.5 million times. You know you’re successful when you’ve turned away more players than most games have total sales.

Update on the number of PUBG bans: 1,500,000.

For those who may have actually been trapped on an island for the past year, PlayerUnkown’s Battlegrounds is a large-scale multiplayer deathmatch inspired by movies like The Hunger Games and Battle Royale. 100 players are dropped onto an island without any weapons or equipment and have to gather resources and eliminate opponents in order to become the last person standing. Last week, PUBG 1.0 was finally released on PC, which helped rocket the game past the 30 million units sold mark.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is available on PC and in early access form on Xbox One.
