Sources have told GameSpot News' sister site, ZDNN, that Intel is ramping up to announce the Pentium III on Monday, Jan. 11. While there hasn't been any word on how much the chips will cost - and considering the marketplace, prices will probably change several times before the chip reaches the market - early word out of Intel is that the chips will launch at 450MHz and 500MHz. Pentium III chips should be shipping sometime in March.
In addition to having more speed, the chips will offer Katmai New Instructions. These instructions will add 70 new instructions to the chip to help accelerate 3D graphics, audio, video, and perhaps voice recognition.
And considering the way games have been eating up all the power of the Pentium II, game publishers are probably waiting in the wings to announce products to support the new instructions and chip.
