Peh-beck and Butane
Peh-beck and Butane-October 2024
Oct 28, 2024 4:35 PM

One of the interesting moments in a traditional Korean wedding is the peh-beck, a traditional Korean ceremony between groom and bride, and between the bridal couple and the groom and bride’s family. At the tail end of the ceremony, the groom is asked to place the bride on his back and walk around a small table three times, a symbolic gesture that represents his desire and ability to support his wife in the years to come.

So what does this have to do with E3? Well, first, I came down to Los Angeles a day early in order to attend just such a wedding on Saturday night. Second, I can't help but think how that little segment of the peh-beck ceremony is a nice metaphor for how the GameSpot crew will be rolling this week at E3. At some point this week, someone is going to need to climb up on the back of someone else and be carried for a few laps. Not literally, of course--I doubt there's too many folks here that could carry my bloated carcass that far. Instead, I'm speaking in the figurative sense. Appointments will be constant, deadlines will be tight and, sooner or later, we’re all going to need a hand getting something done. Worse yet, there’s all the things we can't control--such as last year when the GameSpot booth had a total Internet meltdown, just before going "live" with that morning’s E3 show broadcast.

In some ways, the GameSpot team here in L.A. is a lot like a marriage… for better or worse, and all that. Regardless of circumstances, we're all here to get the job done. Each of us has a role to fulfill over the next week and each of us has our own load to carry. The best part about being at E3--beyond the craziness and the games and (oooh pretty!) glitz--is knowing that the person on either side of you is willing to toss you on his or her back for a while.

Here's hoping you enjoy watching and reading the results of our particularly odd union this week.

Finally, apropos of nothing, here's a picture of Matt Rorie, proving just how determined he is to kick the ass of E3 this year.
