Pacific Rim 2: Here's the Latest on What's Happening-November 2024
Nov 16, 2024 1:34 AM

Guillermo del Toro's latest film, Crimson Peak, is currently in cinemas, but it's the potential sequel to his last film, 2013's Pacific Rim, that is of most interest to many fans.

Since joining Twitter last month, the director has been very open about the development status of the various movies and video games that he is involved in. Now he's provided an update about Pacific Rim 2:

PACIFIC RIM 2: Budget and script went in. No answers yet. If anything happens, I will post. If nothing happens, I will just keep rambling.

While there is no guarantee that the film will happen, Del Toro's tweet did at least confirm that the project was moving ahead from his side.

In September, there was some confusion over the status of the sequel, after initial reports that distributors Universal were planning to cancel the film entirely. Despite removing it from an August 2017 release slot, the studio subsequently reaffirmed its commitment to the movie, stating that "the decision was made to delay the production and release of Pacific Rim so that the creative team can continue in its efforts to exceed the amazing experience of the first film."

Pacific Rim was released in July 2013, and starred Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, and Ron Perlman. Despite initially disappointing domestic box office returns, it went on to become a global hit, making more than $411 million worldwide.
