Ouya consoles will begin showing up at Target stores across the United States this month, CEO Julie Uhrman told Polygon today. Demo kiosks are planned for early 2014, she said.
Target has been an Ouya retail partner since launch, but until now, the console was only available at some of the outlets. Now, the system will be sold across Target's 1,800 US stores.
"That allows us to do national campaigns and have a national footprint," Uhrman said.
Beginning in November, Target will promote the Ouya via an in-store video trailer and offer a promotion for a $10 game card with the purchase of a console. The Ouya will also be promoted in Target's weekly advertisements, Uhrman said.
In addition to the Target deal, Uhrman said Ouya's international availability will be expanded this month across Western Europe, including France, Italy, Germany, Spain, and the Middle East.
The Ouya demo kiosks will begin appearing at select stores in early 2014. Uhrman said these are "incredibly expensive" in part because they must be manned. A special wired controller also had to be designed for the demo kiosks.
Games that may be offered at the Ouya demo kiosks include Towerfall, Clark, and Fist of Awesome, Uhrman said.
Regarding further future expansion, Uhrman said Ouya representatives are in discussions with Wal-Mart to offer the console.
Last week, Uhrman recalled Ouya's struggles during its first year.
"We have done a lot of things wrong. We've made a lot of mistakes, and I think one thing that's really unique about us is that we're going to continue to make them," Uhrman said. "We're young, we're scrappy, we're moving fast. We're building this product in the open with you. We got our start with you. We get better every day because we listen to you. Some things are going to resonate and some things aren't going to resonate."
The Ouya microconsole officially launched in June. It has not been announced how many units have been sold to date.
