Oppenheimer's IMAX Run Officially Extended
Oppenheimer's IMAX Run Officially Extended-January 2024
Jan 3, 2025 11:29 PM

While Barbie came out on top of the Barbeheimer phenomenon as Greta Gerwig's film featuring the fashion icon doll is heading towards a $1 billion global box office, Christopher Nolan's world-shattering biopic about J. Robert Oppenheimer is getting a small boost starting this week.

Nolan released the film in standard theaters as well as the premium IMAX format, and now IMAX has announced that it will be extending Oppenheimer's run by a week. Originally leaving the format on August 11, it will now run through August 16/17.

with the incredible success of #Oppenheimer in @IMAX theaters, @UniversalPics and IMAX have announced it will run an additional week through August 16/17, with plans to bring back IMAX showtimes in the late summer/fall, as availability permits.

Universal Pictures scored a nice three-week exclusive run on IMAX since Nolan's film was shot entirely on large format film stock with IMAX cameras. This isn't the first Nolan film on IMAX but definitely his longest theatrical one in the format. This news might not make Tom Cruise happy though.

Paramount Pictures might have been hoping that the latest Mission: Impossible installment would get some IMAX screens back at the end of the three-week exclusive, and a healthy boost for its own box office. However Ethan Hunt and company will have to stick to the standard ratio, but it might also have to be due to favoritism due to Nolan.

"Nolan has a special place in IMAX's heart because he uses our cameras and promotes us," IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond said to Variety back in June. "It's not a matter of us saying which [movie] we can make more money on. I would hope after Oppenheimer's run, we can bring back Mission."

This extension also helps with the fact that the IMAX showings of Oppenheimer are only available at just 19 locations across the United States, and only 30 theaters in total worldwide, which has led to across-the-board sellouts. So if you missed out, now could be your chance to see it on the biggest screen available.
