SquareSoft and Japanese data services firm I-O Data Corporation have revealed plans to release an official 56k modem for SquareSoft's PlayOnline service in Japan. Titled P2Gate, the USB modem is compatible with the Sony PlayStation 2 and will carry a suggested retail price of about $64 (8,000 yen). The P2Gate PlayOnline modem will be released in September in Japan. It will be compatible with the online RPG Final Fantasy XI, which is set to arrive in Japan in spring 2002. Of course, other PS2-compatible USB modems will also work with the game. The PlayOnline service will begin beta testing in Japan this fall.
