Last month, a rumor circulating online revealed that no new Assassin's Creed game was going to be released this year. Ubisoft didn't talk about the matter until today, and it seems like the rumor indeed stated the truth.

　　Earlier today, a new message from the Assassin's Creed team has been shared on the Official Ubisoft Blog, confirming that no new Assassin's Creed game is going to be released this year. The team confirmed they are stepping back and re-examining the franchise, updating the development processes as well.

　　This year, we also are stepping back and re-examining the Assassin’s Creed franchise. As a result, we’ve decided that there will not be a new Assassin’s Creed game in 2016. Since the release of Assassin’s Creed Unity, we’ve learned a lot based on your feedback. We’ve also updated our development processes and recommitted to making Assassin’s Creed a premier open-world franchise.

　　The Assassin's Creed team has also revealed that they're taking the time to further evolve the series mechanics, promising to deliver more unique gameplay experiences in future titles.

　　According to the rumor from last month, the next Assassin's Creed game, which should be released in 2017, will be set in ancient Egypt and it will be the start of a new character trilogy. The game will apparently come with plenty of new features that will set it apart from the rest of the series. None of these details have been confirmed, so take everything with a grain of salt until an official statement comes in on the matter.

　　The latest Assassin's Creed game released last year on consoles and PC is Assassin's Creed Syndicate. The latest entry of the Chronicles subseries, Assassin's Creed Chronicles India, has been released last month.
