Microsoft and Sony may not be the only companies that benefit from the upcoming launch of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. New consoles coming to market may signal greater consumer interest in games overall, according to Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, who downplayed the effect competing consoles will have on Nintendo's business this holiday during a recent earnings presentation.

　　"I think the launch of other video game systems is also good for us because they energize the video game industry as a whole," Iwata said. "Though there are some who take the view that intensified competition means overseas competition will be tough for Nintendo, no matter how Nintendo does domestically, I do not necessarily see it that way. This year, what Nintendo is promoting is, conversely, to stand out in the game industry for individuality. I believe we have become a unique value."

　　One way Nintendo will stand out this holiday season is by promoting family-oriented titles for Wii U, compared to the slate of titles for Xbox One and PS4 aimed at "highly skilled" players, Iwata said.

　　"We have an offering of software for the end of this calendar year that encourages family fun at home," Iwata said. Some of the titles he called out were Super Mario 3D World, Wii Party U, Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, Wii Sports Club, and Wii Fit U.

　　"Other companies will launch new consoles, but I think they focus on targeting highly skilled users," Iwata said. "Therefore, in that sense, though the competition will heat up because new game consoles will come out and there will be a 'war of the game consoles' played out in media articles, we wonder if the target user will actually be the same."

　　Looking into 2014, Iwata said Nintendo is preparing "a number" of Wii U games that will appeal to "highly skilled users." He did not name these outright, but core-focused 2014 Nintendo games could include Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Bros., and Bayonetta 2, among others. A new Legend of Zelda game for Wii U is also in development, though Nintendo has yet to announce a release date.

　　The PS4 launches in North America on November 15, while the Xbox One arrives November 22.
