Now that Black Friday and Cyber Monday are behind us, gamers need to know – which console “won” the Thanksgiving weekend battle? We don’t have a definitive answer to that question just yet, but it certainly seems like Nintendo made out like bandits!
According to Nintendo of America, they sold over $250 million worth of gaming goodies over the Thanksgiving weekend, with the Nintendo Switch being the overall top-selling video game product online during the 5-day period. Nintendo haven’t released specific Thanksgiving weekend Switch sales numbers, but the system had it best-selling week ever, and has now sold 8.2 million units in North America. The Switch’s latest big-name games are also doing well -- Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu and Let’s Go, Eevee have already sold 1.5 million units, and Super Mario Party has managed to suprass the 1 million unit mark.
Meanwhile, the 3DS, NES Classic, and SNES Classic continue to generate a steady stream of cash for Nintendo. The 3DS has now sold 22 million units in North America, the NES Classic has sold 2 million, and the SNES Classic has sold 2.5 million. Overall, Nintendo’s Black Friday to Cyber Monday hardware sales were up 45 percent this year, and software sales were up a hearty 78 percent.
So yeah, a happy holiday season for Nintendo! That said, we shouldn’t declare them our winners just yet. Sony had that great $200 Spider-Man 1TB PS4 bundle, which was selling out all weekend long. Nintendo may have won the online battle, but I have a feeling Sony may have won the overall war. If Sony did win, I’m sure they’ll release a press release boasting about it soon enough!
Did you manage to get out and grab any Black Friday or Cyber Monday deals? What hardware and/or games did you pick up? Who do you think ultimately won the weekend?
