Earlier in the week, Lego and Nintendo teased an upcoming collaboration, and the vast majority of people said, "I hope we get a Lego Mario game." Sadly, that's not the case. However, what the two companies revealed was something innovative and interesting. You can build your own Mario levels and run through them with a Mario Lego figure with an animated screen on his chest.
The latest Lego set features all of your favorite Mario sounds like "Ya-hoo!" and "Wow-wow-wow-wow!" as the Mario Lego figure you play with--which features animated eyes, chest, and tons of Mario-related noises and music--traverses the hellish landscape you create filled with Goombas, Piranha Plants, and uncertain doom. A trailer for the upcoming playset was revealed, which you can check out below. Enjoy the oddly satisfying clicking noises.

Now Playing: Super Mario Lego - It's Lego Mario Time Trailer
The set doesn't have a specific release date yet. The Lego website notes it is coming later this year and more information on this set will be available in the near future.
"We are very excited to bring Mario into the physical world through interactive and social LEGO play," said Julia Goldin, chief marketing officer, EVP of the Lego Group. "With this experience we will help millions of kids with love for Mario to engage and play in a completely new way, where they are in control of creating and playing games with their favorite character. By seamlessly incorporating the latest digital technology, Lego Super Mario is a highly social, interactive and collaborative experience for kids."

If only Nintendo and Lego had gone the extra step to make this feel a bit more like Nintendo Switch's Mario Maker 2, as this Lego set feels very much inspired by that. If we could get a variant version of Mario in the construction outfit, that would be much appreciated.
While details about the set aren't revealed, the set seems to work by having the Mario character stand on Lego pieces that have Bluetooth sensors in them--the back of the Mario figure has a Bluetooth symbol on it which you can see early in the video. When Mario "jumps" on a Goomba or lands on below the flagpole, the sensor tells Mario to make the appropriate sound effect. We'll learn more about this set in the upcoming months.
