Nintendo Goes "Prime Time"-October 2024
Oct 28, 2024 6:24 AM

ATLANTA - Nintendo's media briefing Wednesday afternoon was filled with oohs, aahs, and lots of Zelda. The main push of the presentation was that this year, Nintendo's going to be bigger and better than ever before. To reach its goal, the company has planned a fourth quarter lineup that it hopes will be met with success.

Zelda made a huge splash at the briefing. Miyamoto himself introduced the game to the press. This is undoubtedly going to be the biggest game on the Nintendo 64 ever, not just in size but vey likely in popularity as well.

According to Nintendo's executive vice president of sales and marketing Peter Main, Nintendo expects to sell two million units between Thanksgiving '98 and the end of the year. The MSRP will be an affordable US$69.95 for the cartridge which weighs in at 256 megabit.

Nintendo showed off the US version of Pokemon, which will be, according to Nintendo, the biggest handheld game launch ever. It will be accompanied by the animated Pokemon TV series, which was also shown to attendees at the briefing. With the slogan "Catch ‘em if you can!" Nintendo stands at the forefront of what will likely be a repeat of the Japanese Pokemon craze. Pokemon is scheduled for a release in the US this September 28.

Not much news was revealed today about the Color Game Boy. Originally thought to be released in late summer, the newest member to the Game Boy family will be released on November 23 for an MSRP of $79.95. It will initially launch with six titles from Nintendo. Additionally, the mini-game Pocket Pikachu will be released in the US at the beginning of November, furthering the Pokemon craze in North America.

As for the 64DD, Nintendo Chairman Howard Lincoln told the crowd that the DD is not coming for 1998; 1999, however, is still up in the air. He stands by the position that Nintendo will not launch the DD until there are enough killer apps to make it worthwhile. "We don't bring hardware out without killer software," he told the crowd.

Perfect Dark was shown briefly, with the announcement of the game's heroine, Joanna Dark. We'll have more on that game Thursday.
