Nintendo defends Wii U system power
Nintendo defends Wii U system power-October 2024
Oct 23, 2024 1:25 AM

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has spoken out to dispel the "misconception" that the Wii U is underpowered. The executive acknowledged to investors during a post-earnings presentation that some developers believe the system is not powerful, but said others have found the opposite.

"It is a fact that some software development companies assume that Wii U is not powerful enough," Iwata said. "On the contrary, some developers say in interviews that Wii U has a different architecture from other consoles and that, when utilized in the right way, it can perform well. At the moment, there is a great deal of contradictory information."

Iwata explained that Nintendo must do more to prove to publishers and developers that the Wii U is a capable system from a technology perspective.

"Nintendo is required to make more efforts to dispel such a misconception," he said. "In fact, some software companies are actively supporting Wii U and others are not. It is important to have supportive companies enjoy successful sales of a game and feel that their decision to develop something for Wii U was correct."

Whatever steps Nintendo will take to remedy this situation will not come easily or quickly, Iwata said.

"We understand that this cannot possibly be achieved overnight and it may sound unconvincing under the current slow sales of Wii U," he said. "We would like to work to revitalize the Wii U market and show you favorable results for third-party software from this summer."

Wii U sales have struggled thus far, and several major third-party games have chosen to skip over the system. Nintendo plans to breathe new life into the Wii U by releasing major first-party titles for the system like Mario Kart and Zelda, better communicating the novelty of the console, and cutting down on manufacturing costs to drive overall platform profitability.

The Wii U version of Aliens: Colonial Marines was touted as the best-looking iteration overall. However, publisher Sega canceled this game last month for unknown reasons.
