Zelda is set to launch to retailers on November 24, 1998. Currently, Nintendo is offering gamers a preordering option that will allow them to get a special gold cart instead of the classic gray color. Already, one retailer has sold out of preorder gold copies of Zelda. There has been no official word on how many gold cart preorder copies of the game have been reserved.
"We estimate that the best-selling game for any dedicated platform or PC, for all of 1998, will be Zelda 64, by a comfortable margin,'' Nintendo America executive vice president Peter Main said at a toy industry conference Tuesday. "And it will only be on sale for the last 39 days of this year."
Nintendo will launch the title with a US$10 million ad campaign which will include a movie trailer preview that will show at 11,000 movie theatres asking, "Wilst ye soar, or wilst ye suck?"
With a known brand name like Zelda hitting the shelves in its first fully 3D form, Nintendo may just hit the two million goal in six weeks. As the Christmas season comes closer, we're sure to hear status reports from the big N.
