Garth Davis has been tapped to direct the upcoming next Tron movie, according to Deadline. Davis is an Australian film, TV, and commercial director perhaps best known for helming smaller, artier fare like 2018's Mary Magdalene and 2016's drama Lion, which received six Oscar nominations including for Best Picture. The upcoming, still-untitled sequel to 2010's Tron: Legacy would be Davis' first tent-pole film. According to Deadline, "insiders say Davis aggressively pursued the job and his take won over Disney execs in the end."

　　All that's known about the upcoming Tron sequel is Jared Leto (Blade Runner 2049, Suicide Squad) will star, and is also producing along with Justin Springer and Emma Ludbrook. Jesse Wigutow (It Runs in the Family) has reportedly written the most recent draft of the script.

　　Despite a roster starting to come together, there has still not been a firm announcement or greenlight indicating that the next Tron movie will be happening. The addition of Davis only signals that momentum and traction is building, and a new Tron film is likely but not yet a sure thing. Rumors have been steadily percolating and resurfacing about Tron 3 for years.

　　The Tron series goes all the way back to 1982, with Jeff Bridges starring as a computer programmer who goes inside the software world of a mainframe computer where he interacts with programs in his attempt to escape. For its time, the movie was considered a special-effects juggernaut that broke and set all sorts of new filmmaking precedents. As time has gone on, the cult hit has grown into a muscular franchise in its own right with a devoted fanbase.
