Amazon is reportedly planning a Marvel-style Tomb Raider universe that will span video games, TV, and film. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Amazon--which is publishing the next Tomb Raider game and has a new TV series in the works from Phoebe Waller-Bridge--is also making a new Tomb Raider movie.
The report said Amazon is attempting to create a "connected world of Tomb Raider," with the games, TV series, and film tied together. Sources told THR that Amazon is working with dj2 Entertainment on the film and the upcoming TV series.
This is apparently a gigantic deal, with a source telling THR that Amazon's investment into the reported Tomb Raider connected universe would be among Amazon's "largest commitments" after The Lord of the Rings. Amazon is reported to have spent $250 million on the rights alone for The Lord of the Rings, which is used to create the TV series The Rings of Power.
Waller-Bridge, who won an Emmy for Fleabag, is not involved with Amazon's new Tomb Raider video game or film, the report said.
In addition to Amazon's reported Tomb Raider projects, Netflix is working with dj2 Entertainment on a Tomb Raider anime series.
The Tomb Raider film series debuted in 2001 with a movie starring Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft. Jolie also starred in the 2003 sequel, The Cradle of Life. The franchise was rebooted in 2018 with Oscar-winner Alicia Vikander in the lead role. The movie did not perform very well in the US, where it made $58 million, but it earned more than $200 million from international markets for a total of $274.6 million against a reported $94 million budget.
Plans were said to be in place for a Tomb Raider sequel starring Vikander, but when the Tomb Raider movie rights went up for sale in 2022, Vikander dropped out.
It's very early days for the next Tomb Raider movie, so there is no word yet on who might play Lara Croft in Amazon's rumored film.
