Enter the Maelstorm, which is in development at Virgin Interactive's revamped internal studio, puts players in the role of one of two pirate bands that are battling for control in deep space. Although much of the combat takes place in outer space with spaceships, there are also missions that are set inside huge space-vessels. This is where the game switches to a first-person mode, and players must engage in combat with a variety of enemies. Additional NPC characters such as an assassin, computer hacker, and an explosive expert are also at the player's disposal, and teamwork plays a vital part in the game.
The game uses the next-generation Unreal engine named Unreal Warfare. In terms of multiplayer options, it will feature split-screen offline play on the PS2 and online gaming on the Xbox version, which will be released next year. Batman and Judge Dredd artist Jim Murray is creating the characters in the game, while Judge Dredd writer Robbie Morrison scripts the missions.
The game is set for a release before Christmas 2001 on the PlayStation 2. The screenshots shown are from the PS2 version.
