Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo's key development executive, has suggested that a new F-Zero game would not be developed without the company creating a new control scheme.

In an interview with the YouTube video channel Smosh Games, Miyamoto took questions on a broad range of subjects, including the possibility of developing a new F-Zero title for the Wii U.

"If we create a new type of controller interface, and we find a controller interface that's particularly suited for F-Zero, then maybe we'll do something with it in the future," Miyamoto said.

This comment comes just weeks after Miyamoto revealed that Nintendo is in the preliminary phases of developing the successor to the Wii U.

In December he said: "Nintendo as a whole has groups working on ideas for new hardware systems. While we're busy working on software for the Wii U, we have production lines that are working on ideas for what the next system might be."

Nintendo has a history of reinventing its input devices with the arrival of each new games console.

The comments would also suggest that the likelihood an F-Zero game on the Wii U remains slim. In 2013, Miyamoto poured cold water on speculation that the company was working on a new entrant in the racing series.

"I certainly understand that people want a new F-Zero game," Miyamoto said at the time.

"I think where I struggle is that I don't really have a good idea for what's new that we could bring to F-Zero that would really turn it into a great game again."

F-Zero GX, now twelve years old, was the last game in the series to ship on home consoles. One of the series' most famous courses--Mute City--can be bought as DLC on Mario Kart 8.

Elsewhere in his interview with Smosh Games (below), Miyamoto confirmed that a playable version of Star Fox Wii U will be ready for E3.

"Star Fox is a game where having two screens is really important," he said.
